What generative AI is
Gen AI vs classical ML — creating new content, not only classifying the old.
“Generative AI” (often shortened to Gen AI) is a family of systems that create new content — text, images, audio, code — that wasn’t sitting in a fixed answer key.
Generative vs discriminative (plain version)
A helpful contrast:
| Kind | Everyday job | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Discriminative / classical ML | Sort or score what already exists | “Is this email spam?” “What’s the price estimate?” |
| Generative AI | Produce something new that fits a request | “Write a polite reply.” “Sketch a logo idea.” |
Both are “AI.” Gen AI is the branch that generates. Classical ML still powers lots of real products — recommendations, fraud scores, medical image flags — without writing essays.
What Gen AI is good at
- Turning messy asks into drafts you can edit.
- Exploring options (“give me three outlines”).
- Translating, summarizing, and rephrasing when you stay in the driver’s seat.
What it is not
- A guaranteed truth engine.
- The same thing as “all of AI.”
- Always better than a simple classifier for a yes/no job.

Takeaway
When someone says Gen AI, think content creator under instruction — powerful for drafts and exploration, still needing your judgment for facts and decisions.
List two tasks: one that needs a label or score, and one that needs a new draft. Which fits classical ML better? Which fits Gen AI?
